Stripping Diapers

Sometimes cloth diapers can get funky with detergent build-up.  The best way to rid diapers of detergent build-up is so "strip" them.  Stripping your cloth diaper is quite easy.  If you suspect any type of build-up (detergent, diaper cream) and your diapers are leaking, then simply follow these easy instructions:
  • Wash your cloth diapers once in hot water with one teaspoon (for high efficiency washing machines) to one tablespoon (for regular washing machines) with Original Liquid Dawn (blue formula).
  • Do two additional hot water washes with no detergent to completely rinse the diapers clean. If you still see suds, continue rinsing until the diapers are rinsed clean and there are no more suds.
If you happen use a diaper cream that's not cloth safe and it's left a stain or residue on your diapers, simply pre-treat the area with Dawn (blue formula) and scrub it with a tooth brush.  Then, follow the above instructions to strip the diaper cream from the diapers.
NOTE: Many cloth diaper manufacturers recommend stripping your cloth diapers when you are switching to a different detergent.

  1. I always hear of using the blue dawn on some facebook groups and these instructions are simple and easy to follow! Thanks for the great info!

  2. Lots of bad advice being given here. Dawn is a degreaser, so it wont do anything for your cloth diapers. You should never ever put Dawn in your washer. It can break your washer. Dawn even says not to use it in a washer. Detergent build up is a myth. Detergents don't build up because they are designed to rinse out. If you have stink then that means something is wrong with your wash routine and/or detergent. You shouldn't need to strip at all. Most people in this area has hard water so if you do a bunch plain washes and rinses your gonna get mineral build up from washing in hard water. The advice being given in this blog is out dated. People used to blame detergents for "build up" in their diapers but it was actually mineral build up from washing diapers in hard water without adding in a water softener.
